Isiah, Tar Heels and the Coors Events Center

The college basketball season officially tipped off last night with some notable games, including No. 4 North Carolina’s 88-72 victory over Florida International.

Colorado head coach Jeff Bzdelik tried really hard to bring FIU to Boulder this season.

And not because the Buffs thought they could beat the Panthers.

No, Bzdelik thought it would be fun to have Isiah Thomas — FIU’s new coach — roam the sideline at the Coors Events Center.

Unfortunately, FIU is trying to cash in on Thomas’ hoops celebrity while he is the face of the program and asked for way too much money to come all the way out to CU.

Bzdelik is still planning to have North Carolina — that’s right, the defending national champion Tar Heels — on the non-conference schedule next season with the game to be played in the Coors Events Center.

The deal has been in the works since the former Nuggets coach took the job.

Needless to say, Mike Bohn won’t have to sell tickets to a Buffs-Tar Heels matchup for $1, which is how cheap an adult can get into Friday’s season-opener against Arkansas-Pine Bluff.
