Buffs shorthanded in Maui

LAHAINA, Maui — Greetings Buffs fans. I’m typing this courtside at the Lahaina Civic Center less than 30 minutes before the EA Sports Maui Invitational tips off.

Colorado will be without head coach Jeff Bzdelik, who flew from Maui to Chicago last night to be with his ailing mother.

Associate head coach Steve McClain will lead the Buffs into battle against Gonzaga shortly. He will not have the services of Trent Beckley, who is out with a stomach virus.

Even though the 6-10 forward from Vail only played sparingly in the first three games CU could use his size today against a Zags lineup that includes 7-footer Robert Sacre (17.0 ppg, 6.5 rpg) and Elias Harris (17.5 ppg, 8.0 rpg).

Levi Knutson, a junior guard who missed the first three games with a hip injury, warmed up and could give the Buffs a lift off the bench.

This venue is exactly as it seems on television — like a small high school gym with a great atmosphere.

The Civic Center is up on a hill so fans can tailgate in the sun overlooking the Pacific Ocean. There’s also a beer garden.

Paradise found for hoops junkies.
