Maui madness

LAHAINA, Hawaii — Well, it has been a strange week in paradise.

It began with Colorado basketball coach Jeff Bzdelik having to fly back to Chicago to attend to his ailing mother and ends with Mike Bohn getting ready to fly back to Boulder to make an announcement about Dan Hawkins’ future as the football coach.

In between, the Buffs showed themselves well in losses to Gonzaga (76-72) and Arizona (91-87) and Wednesday’s victory over host Chaminade (73-58).

Maryland, which was ranked before play began, also exits the EA Sports Maui Invitational with a 1-2 record and no wins over a major program (the Terps also beat Division II Chaminade).

Gary Williams didn’t let his players speak with reporters after Maryland’s loss to Wisconsin on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, the Buffs talked about leaving here believing they can compete with anyone in the country.

All and all I would say it was a successful tournament for CU, despite the two gut-wrenching defeats.
