AUSTIN, Texas — Greetings Buffs fans.
I’m at the Erwin Center getting ready to watch Colorado take on No. 2 Texas in the Big 12 opener.
The Buffs are a 21-point underdog, despite a recent history of playing well against the Longhorns.
I think Jeff Bzdelik’s team will cover that number for two reasons:
1. CU is much better this season. Cory Higgins and Alec Burks are legitimate Big 12 players who can create problems for any team, including Texas.
2. Rick Barnes is a good friend of Bzdelik’s and respects the work he has done in Boulder. Texas will call off the dogs if the game gets away from CU.
As for a Buffs’ victory for the ages? Signs point to no way.
This is my third season covering the team and I’ve yet to witness a Big 12 road victory for CU.
In fact, wins over Denver, Air Force and Colorado State during Bzdelik’s first season are the only true road victories I’ve covered.
My prediction: Texas 82, CU 70.
As for the rest of the Big 12 season, I’d like to see the Buffs win six Big 12 games and go into the Big 12 Tournament 15-15 with a chance to play their way into the CBI postseason tournament.
Unfortunately, I only see four conference wins for CU and a first-round loss in Kansas City.
A 13-18 (4-12) record would be an improvement over last season’s 9-20 (1-15) debacle, but it’s certainly not what Bzdelik had in mind for his third season.
