Buffs and Beavers, oh my (poor picks)

The Pac-12 is full of early surprises. Jon Embree’s Buffs are in first place in the South (tied with Arizona State) and Mike Riley’s Beavers are tied with No. 2 Oregon and No. 8 Stanford in the North.

Congratulations to Colorado quarterback Jordan Webb (offense) and Oregon State punter Keith Kostol (special teams) for winning Pac-12 player of the week honors.

Oregon’s speedy spread offense usually grabs all of the headlines, but Ducks linebacker Michael Clay is the conference’s defensive player of the week.

A quick look at last week’s predictions and results:

Oregon State at UCLA

My prediction: Bruins win a tough one at home, 23-17. Actual outcome: Bruins upset at the Rose Bowl, 27-20.

Cal at USC

My prediction: Trojans rebound with a 31-20 win. Actual outcome: Trojans rebound with a 27-9 win.

Utah at Arizona State

My prediction: Utes pull off a 27-24 road win. Actual outcome: Sun Devils dominate, 37-7.

Arizona at Oregon

My prediction: Ducks by 20 (48-28). Actual outcome: Ducks by 49 (49-0).

Colorado at Washington State

My prediction: Buffs roll over late and lose 45-24. Actual outcome: Buffs fight back in fourth quarter and win 35-34.

Now on to this week’s games:

No. 8 Stanford (3-0, 1-0) at Washington (2-1, 0-0) at CenturyLink Field in Seattle (7 p.m., ESPN)

Will the Cardinal finally miss Andrew Luck? Well, last year Stanford rushed for a school-record 446 yards against Washington. Cardinal pulls out a 27-24 road win this time.

Arizona State (3-1, 1-0) at Cal (1-3, 0-1) at Memorial Stadium in Berkeley (2 p.m., FX)

The Bears have are coming off back-to-back road games at Ohio State and USC. Time for some home cooking. Cal wins 31-27.

No. 18 Oregon State (2-0, 1-0) at Arizona (3-1, 0-1) at Arizona Stadium in Tucson (8 p.m., Pac-12 Networks).

Both of the Beavers’ wins were against ranked opponents. Wildcats will be looking to atone for poor performance in Eugene. Arizona in a mild upset, 30-27.

No. 2 Oregon (4-0, 1-0) at Washington State (2-2, 0-1) at Martin Stadium in Pullman (8:30 p.m., ESPN2).

Ducks are drooling after watching the fourth-quarter film from CU’s comeback win. Oregon wins 56-20.

UCLA (3-1, 0-1) at Colorado (1-3, 1-0) at Folsom Field (4 p.m., Pac-12 Networks)

The Buffs could be in sole possession of first place in the South Division with a win and an Arizona State loss. I’ll try to help CU out by picking the Bruins to win 45-23.

Idle: No. 13 USC (3-1) and Utah (2-2). The Utes host the Trojans on Oct. 4.

My season record: 28-10 (.737)
